Here is a little about the program...
CARE and CollectiveGood International are working together on a major mobile phone recycling initiative. It’s designed to capture idle mobile phones in North America and redeploy them, solving an environmental problem, raising funds for CARE and bridging the digital divide. The program offers an easy way to solve the dilemma that many mobile phone users face: how to properly dispose of idle, used devices.
Some of the redeployed phones will be used by CARE's in-country field staff to more efficiently manage poverty-fighting projects. These phones provide affordable, modern communication in countries where the majority of the citizens have never enjoyed the benefits of telecommunications.
CollectiveGood pays CARE for the remaining phones and readies them for sale in developing countries. Proceeds from the sale of these phones will be used by CARE to further their poverty-fighting work -- essentially converting idle mobile phones into food, clean water, medicine and education programs throughout the developing world.
Millions of the idle mobile phones are simply sitting in drawers and on shelves of individuals and companies, where they will most likely stay until they are thrown in the trash. This poses a potential environmental problem, since mobile phones contain toxic materials such as cadmium, lead, mercury and gallium arsenide. By taking a few simple steps to recycle these mobile phones, potential environmental damage is averted. Recycling mobile phones preserves the environment, provides support for CARE's humanitarian activities and improves lives by bridging the digital divide through affordable telecommunications.
Thank you in advance,
Angelle
